WNBA Post Game Press Notes 7/9
Covering Wednesday's four games. Post game quotes are a great way to help you get a jump on the usage, schemes and adjustments.
Seattle Storm
4th quarter issues:
“I think the fourth quarter we started to panic and I think I will be the first one to say that we disrespected Connecticut today. … We thought, ‘Okay, now we're up. We can relax and we just stopped playing basketball.’ So, we got what we deserved today.”
“You have to show up every night no matter who is in front of us. … You have to step forward and respect any team that comes and gives you a great game. And that's exactly what they did.”
“They ratcheted up their physicality. … We didn't execute where we needed to—nine points. Again, not going to win games shooting that bad in the fourth quarter and not matching energy. … A few miscues coming out of a timeout, miscues defensively, helping off strong side, just not disciplined in a lot of areas. … Allowing Connecticut to score 27 points in a fourth is unacceptable and that's going to net bad things for us.”
Defensive Issues and Adjustments:
“We weren’t covering ball screens well and at the end of the day, you can’t leave shooters open. … Our defense kind of always dictates what we do offensively. We were able to score at a high clip for three quarters. In that fourth quarter I just feel like our execution was awful.”
“Connecticut showed a heavy nail presence. They’re pretty aggressive on the ball screens and we talked throughout the entire game that where the open action would be and I just feel like we turned the ball over way too much in that stretch but also we weren’t sharp and understanding where the things that we did early on in the game, we just went away from doing that in that particular quarter.”
Rebounding:
“Tina Charles is a Hall of Famer and she played like it tonight. Saya did a great job getting downhill. Obviously, her defensive energy disrupted me quite a bit. I got to be better with that. … They were getting all the 50-50 balls, especially like Tina in that fourth quarter.”
Adjustments for the Next Game:
“We need to take care of the ball, make sure that defensively we’re staying disciplined. … Foul discipline is going to be very important. … Our mindset has to be different and we have to be prepared to play them way better than we did today.”

Jacy Seldon on offensive and defensive focus:
“I think our identity is that we need to come out with energy. … I put that on myself. Coming out with energy and also being aggressive. I thought today on the offensive end we were a lot more aggressive. We got to the free throw line a little bit more… puts more pressure on their defense and then it's a better momentum for us coming out. … On the defensive end, I thought we did a really good job. Saniya did a really good job. She had four steals. Leila is a bigger guard on the ball that just was very disruptive. … Especially in that second half, we did a better job defensively and put pressure on them.”
